FROM Dr. Frank Varro, Pastor of Westchase UMC~
There is just One week left before the big city-wide Rally for PASTOR
YUN from CHINA, Friday evening, 7:00 p.m., September 8, 2006, at
Westchase UMC, 9603 Westheimer Road, in Houston (Please note our big red
banner on Westheimer in Chinese and English!).
Known as "The Heavenly Man," Pastor Yun was imprisoned three times,
persecuted, tortured, and starved, but God miraculously delivered him.
He literally walked out (like Peter in Acts 12) of a maximum security
prison, from which no person had ever escaped, (guards lost their jobs).
He has a vision to carry the gospel around the globe in this
generation! Come hear this amazing Chinese pastor tell this inspiring,
life-changing story. The entire service will be in Chinese and English, and we
will be led in worship by a Praise Band brought in especially for this
event. Pray for this great event. Please come, and bring your church,
and friends!

FROM Donna V. Adair, Director of Communications, St. Paul's UMC,
Houston~
Woman to Woman, a group for women in their late 20s through 30s, will
resume weekly meetings at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 7, in the Parlor of
St. Paul's UMC.
Their fall study will be based on the book "Bad Girls of the Bible"
by Barbara Essex. They will discuss one stand-alone chapter per
session, enabling women to attend as their schedules permit without losing
continuity.
Available for around $15 through most book sources, the book was
described by one reader reviewer as "a must-read for all thinking people
of faith and for those searching for an intelligent treatment of the
Bible and women in it."
Childcare is available for participants who make reservations
through kshanahan@stpaulshouston.org within 24 hours of the meeting. For more
information, contact Donna Adair at dadair@stpaulshouston.org or church
phone 713-528-0527 or cell 713-705-6542.

Rule of Benedict: Insight for the Ages" by Joan Chittister, O.S.B. The
study begins August 31 and will be directed by Rev. Gail Williford, St.
Paul’s Minister of Discipleship and Spiritual Development.
Study participants will be asked to read and reflect on these
readings on their own. After August 31, the group will meet semi-monthly from
September 14 through December 28, when they will discuss the texts and
their reactions to them.
The $20 book may be purchased prior to or at the first session. For
more information about this study, contact Rev. Williford at
713-528-0527 or gailwilliford@stpaulshouston.org.

Westchase UMC is happy to announce the city-wide Rally for PASTOR YUN

Westheimer Road, in Houston.
Known as "The Heavenly Man," Pastor Yun was imprisoned three times,
persecuted, tortured, and starved, but the Lord miraculously delivered
him. He literally walked out (shades of Peter in Acts 12!) of a maximum
security prison from which no person had ever escaped, and guards lost
their jobs. He has since toured extensively in the U.S. and elsewhere,
and has a vision to carry the gospel around the globe in this
generation! Come hear this amazing Chinese pastor tell this inspiring,
life-changing story. The entire service will be interpreted in Chinese and
English. A love offering will be taken for Pastor Yun and his ministry.
Please come, and bring your church, and friends!

others. Their website is: ntcumc.org

inspire us and challenge us. Bishop Huie invites you to a conversation
and will celebrate communion Wednesday evening.
In an abbreviated format, we will convene Tuesday afternoon and have
communion together at the end of Wednesday afternoon. Those who can

____________________NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS/EVENTS___________________

FROM Stacy Pever Anzick, Wesley Foundation Direct~
UH students will be moving into their dorms on the main campus
Thursday, August 17 (9-Noon and 7-11 pm), Friday & Saturday, August 18 & 19
(8am-6pm). If you can help move students in, hand out water, or assist in
other ways for 2 or more hours during those days, please consider
volunteering!
I think that students who meet a friendly United Methodist would
give the Wesley Foundation a try sometime during the school year and it
also gives us a good name as people who are helpful and kind! We have
T-shirts for helpers to wear that identify you as part of the Wesley
"movers." If your church has Tshirts, feel free to wear those instead.
You MUST SIGN UP to participate, please do not just SHOW UP.

out a seminary-level class to see if it "fits?" Houston Graduate School
of Theology will offer a fall course in "United Methodist History and
Doctrine" that meets the requirements for ordination candidates and is
applicable to a M.Div. at HGST or for transfer to Perkins or other
seminaries.
The class will meet on Friday afternoons at 1:30 at Lakewood UMC on
the northwest side of Houston, beginning on September 8, and will led
by Dr. C. Chappell Temple, adjunct professor at HGST. To find out how to
register for credit or audit, visit the HGST website, www.hgst.edu, or

_________________________RESTORATIVE JUSTICE_______________________

FROM John Harrington, SE District Restorative Justice Coordinator~

Robert Elie, 7655 Park North Drive, Beaumont, TX 77703
* Womens Prison Gatesville:
Danna Cahill, 2259 Holiman CR, Orange, TX 77630

BREAKING NEWS! I just received an e-mail from Murray Batt that the
Welcome Back facility that sends out the TDCJ release info has burned to
the ground. Hopefully, some church will allow some of their facility to
be used to get this important info out on Welcome Back releases-- on a
temporary basis.

EXTREME HOSPITALITY! Some of the HS Teachers and former school mates,
plus the Operation Rebound team from the Gist State jail in Beaumont,
are taking a newly released Gist State Jail friend out to dinner to
celebrate. Now that is the start of a great aftercare outreach!
We are having another Tent Revival starting next Monday night. There
is a great renewal taking place at this facility.

Just a thought to United Methodist Churches--Want to turn around the
spiraling decline in membership that is happening across the USA??? Get
involved in Prison Ministry and all other facets of Restorative Justice
Ministries. After all, it was the love expressions of the original Holy
Club and incipient Enthusiast "Methodist" churches that got this
movement started anyway.
