_URGENT NEED____________________________

FROM Mary Ann Hodges, Disaster Response Coordinator, Texas Annual
Conference~
I had a long conversation with the Mayor's office last night. There
were almost 3000 homes affected by flooding in Houston last Monday, 6/19.
The City, County, and Red Cross definitions of major & minor damage are
all different so their allocation numbers do not match, but we can all
understand that if your home is one of those 3000, it is a serious
issue for you.
There has been an assessment done (that's how the original number
was identified) and today 16 teams from the city (Fire Department, Waste
Management, Neighborhood Protection and other departments) are going to
conduct a survey to determine what kinds of work needs to be done.
At this point, there has been no broad disaster declaration, so
these families are "on their own" for clean-up and repair work. We have
been asked to start putting together clean-up and construction teams
beginning this week-end, July 1st and/or 2nd.
Please let me know if you are available to work this week-end
(either day) OR if you could be available to work any week-ends in July. This
is an Excellent Opportunity to help our neighbors in Houston AND it is
also an excellent "trial run" for forming our teams to respond to more
wide-spread disasters, which we know will be coming at some point in
time!
Thanks for your support of Disaster Response in the Texas
Conference!

___________________________URGENT NEED____________________________

FROM Ric Walters, TACCOR (that's the Tx A.C. Committee on Relief)~
...........................................Disaster Response
Disaster..................................................
As many of you know, on Mon., June 19th, parts of the Houston area were
inundated by more than 12 inches of rain, causing flooding in several
thousand houses. Ordinarily, TACCOR would be able to respond to meet the
need for Flood Buckets and Health Kits for the victims of this flood.
Unfortunately, on that same Monday, the Christian Alliance warehouse in
Pearland, where almost all of our flood buckets and health kits were
stored (along with tons of food and clothing), was burning to the ground.
Nothing in the warehouse was salvageable. Consequently, there is an
immediate need to replace as many of the destroyed flood buckets and
health kits as possible.
Christian Alliance does have some empty flood buckets in a trailer
which we hope to access on Tuesday, June 27th. At that time, the buckets
will be available for distribution. We are asking every church to step
up and help replenish the supply of completed flood buckets and health
kits. Instructions for completing both items can be found at the UMCOR
website (www.umcor.org). For the time being, there is no central
repository in the Houston area for new buckets, so please find a place to
TEMPORARILY store any new supplies until a new warehouse is located. We
will let you know as soon as we know just where the new facility is
located.
Please help us with this urgent need as past events have shown us
that an adequate supply of flood buckets and health kits is a necessity
in our flood-prone area.

friend tells me that the Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting
enough people to click on their site daily for free mammograms for women in
need. The site is listed below. And while you are at it, there are 5
other sites listed where you can donate without cost to you to help feed
the hungry, provide healthcare for needy kids, books for needy kids,
preservation of rain forests, and animal rescue. It only takes a
minute to click on each tab, go to the top of your screen and hit the "Back"
button, click the next tab, then "Back" again, etc. to donate to any or
all of them. The donation "button" is not far from the top of each
one. Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! This doesn't cost
you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily
visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the web
site! Pass it along to people you know.
